SSGT Joseph Curreri
Joe was known for his incredible bear hugs and infectious smile. He was an avid history buff. The American Civil War, ancient Roman and European history were his passions. These passions and patriotism drove Joe to join the Army after September 11, 2001.
Joe was fiercely patriotic. One July 4th, Joe donned American flag running shorts instead of his Speedo for his coach’s notoriously tough swim workout. He would blast Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture to prepare for races.
Joe never let his successes as a competitive swimmer override his priorities - to be a source of laughter, loyalty and leadership among his friends. While serving as a Green Beret in the Philippines, he endeared himself not only to U.S. servicemen but to the Filipino community. It was for this reason the local community voluntarily renamed the lake in which Joe perished, and a helicopter landing zone, in honor of Joe.
